The SIUE Health Sciences building houses the University's pharmacy and nursing schools, which until now were located in two separate buildings. The focal point of the project is a new three-story building that envelops the two existing structures. Where the new construction meets the old, a two-story atrium is the heart of the complex. Within it, a segment of the nursing building's original exterior is preserved as an interior wall. Red terrazzo forms branch and pool across the atrium floor like blood vessels. Beyond the atrium, the complex holds teaching and research labs, classrooms, and faculty offices. The nursing simulation suite occupies an entire wing, outfitted as a working hospital. Together in this complex, the two programs train alongside each other, as they will eventually work.
