9 Chapel, also known as 219 Jay Street, is a freestanding corner building in downtown Brooklyn. The open-on-all-sides site is used as an occasion to dissolve the line between indoors and outdoors, mediated by a wall of undulating perforated aluminum. The plan of the condominium is shifted and rotated so that most of its 27 units catch three or more exposures. The aluminum panels are skin-like, screening the balconies and terraces for privacy while still admitting light and air. Their rippling quality is generated economically, from just three panel types mixed across the elevations. The mass is broken into smaller blocks to generate further variation from the form than the zoning envelope would normally allow.
