Memphis Academy of Arts
Memphis Academy of Arts — Mann & Harrover — Memphis, TN — 1959
In 1959, a regional competition for a new Memphis art school drew a jury that included Philip Johnson and Paul Rudolph. The prize went to Mann & Harrover, an upstart local firm, over established competitors. Their pavilion of concrete sunscreens and folded roofs won a national design award and launched the career of Roy Harrover, who would go on to shape much of modern Memphis, from its airport to Mud Island.
