Catholic Order of Foresters — Holabird & Root — Naperville, IL — 1984

Catholic Order of Foresters, a fraternal insurance society founded in 1883, built this Naperville headquarters for its centennial, relocating from Chicago in 1984. The building is an H-shaped blue-green Miesian curtain-wall box wrapped in a freestanding brick colonnade that carries no load. The move is pure Post Modernism. By the mid-1980s, high-end firms routinely used the envelope to carry meaning, decoupled from structural concerns.
