Church of the Crucifixion

Church of the Crucifixion exterior corner, concrete undulating walls and cantilevered roof by Costas Machlouzarides, New York New York - architectural photographer New York

Church of the Crucifixion — Costas Machlouzarides — New York, NY — 1967

The Notre-Dame du Haut of Sugar Hill. Costas Machlouzarides translated the spirit of Le Corbusier's pilgrimage chapel for a West Indian Episcopal congregation whose prior church had burned down, siting it on a Harlem block of row houses. The undulating roof and curving walls push reinforced concrete toward its sculptural limit. A single steel cross piercing the cantilevered slab makes the structural audacity the sacred statement.
